AI and the Illusion of Feasibility
Large language models are extremely good at generating plans.
Ask one for a business plan, a startup idea, a marketing strategy, a career pivot, or a system design — and within seconds you’ll often get something that looks impressively detailed. Structured sections, confident language, step-by-step plans.
Sometimes the output reads like something written by a seasoned expert. And often, at first glance, the idea seems completely plausible.
But there’s a recurring pattern that appears once you start looking closely:
AI can generate extremely convincing plans for ideas that collapse under real-world constraints.
The Illusion
The problem is not that AI generates bad ideas. The problem is that it can generate bad ideas that look structurally correct.
The output has all the signals of something well-thought-out:
- structured reasoning
- confident language
- technical terminology
- implementation details
This creates an illusion of feasibility.
The plan feels realistic because it is presented in the format of a realistic plan. But many critical constraints are missing. For example, AI frequently proposes systems that quietly assume:
- unlimited data
- perfect automation
- infinite workers
- zero operational cost
- no regulatory friction
- instant marketplace liquidity
None of these assumptions are stated explicitly. But they are often embedded in the solution. And if you don’t question them, the plan sounds perfectly reasonable.
Plans Without Constraints
One way to think about this is that AI often produces plans without constraints. The structure looks solid, the steps follow logically, the reasoning sounds thorough.
But real plans don’t fail on paper. They fail in reality.
In reality, they run into problems like:
- operational complexity
- legal constraints
- labor markets
- logistics
- human coordination
- failure modes
These things rarely appear in the plan. But they determine whether an idea actually works.
Why This Happens
The reason for this behavior is surprisingly simple.
Large language models are trained to predict the next likely token in a sequence of text. They are extremely good at continuing patterns found in their training data.
For example, many success stories follow a familiar structure:
problem → solution → growth → scale
If a model has seen thousands of variations of this pattern, it can reproduce it very convincingly. So when asked for an idea or a plan, the model synthesizes familiar elements:
- a clear problem
- an elegant solution
- a go-to-market strategy
- a path to scale
These fit together in ways that sound like real playbooks. But the model is not evaluating whether the idea is actually feasible. It is generating something that resembles the structure of a successful narrative.
A Typical Example
Imagine asking an AI for a platform idea. It might suggest something like this:
An API that allows software to trigger real-world tasks.
- Need a property inspection? Call an endpoint.
- Need a courier? Another endpoint.
- Need someone to collect data in the real world? Send a request.
The platform would handle worker matching, dispatch algorithms, task verification, automated payments, marketplace scaling.
At first glance, this sounds elegant. A kind of Uber for real-world tasks.
But once you start asking basic operational questions, the idea begins to unravel: who hires the workers? How are they trained? Who manages liability, verifies task quality, handles no-shows, or navigates labor laws across countries?
Suddenly the “platform idea” becomes:
- a global logistics company
- a workforce management system
- a legal and compliance operation
- a massive quality assurance organization
The entire problem shifts from concept to reality.
Anyone who has tried to build something in the real world knows:
Operations problems are where elegant plans go to die.
The Questions AI Never Asks
People with real hands-on experience in a field tend to instinctively check for hidden complexity.
They ask questions like:
- What are the failure modes?
- Who maintains this?
- What does this cost to operate?
- Where does the data come from?
- What happens when something goes wrong?
These questions often expose the gap between a clean conceptual solution and a messy real-world problem.
AI tends to focus on the descriptive layer:
- components
- interfaces
- high-level behavior
But real-world problems live in the constraint layer:
- economics
- operations
- coordination
- maintenance
Without those constraints, almost any idea can be made to sound reasonable.
The Real Risk
The real risk isn’t that AI makes mistakes. It’s that AI can produce professional-sounding nonsense.
For people with deep domain experience, the gaps are often obvious.
But for everyone else — students, first-time founders, anyone exploring a new field — the output can feel like expert guidance. Because it looks exactly like something an expert might write.
The structure creates authority. Even when the reasoning is incomplete.
The Feasibility Gap
You could think of this as a feasibility gap.
Large language models are excellent at simulating how ideas are described.
But they are much worse at evaluating whether those ideas can actually exist.
They don’t simulate:
- logistics
- labor markets
- regulatory environments
- cost structures
- human behavior
Instead, they simulate stories about systems. And stories about ideas are usually much cleaner than the reality of executing them.
AI Is Still Incredibly Useful
None of this means AI isn’t valuable. It is!
These tools are fantastic for brainstorming, exploring ideas, learning new things, and getting unstuck.
But they have a blind spot everyone needs to understand.
LLMs can generate extremely convincing descriptions of systems that collapse the moment they encounter reality.
The danger is not that AI is wrong. The danger is that it can be wrong in a way that sounds exactly like expertise.
And that makes it very easy to believe.
